News broke Monday Night that WWE has been in talks with Stone Cold Steve Austin regarding a possible in ring return at WrestleMania 38. The current rumblings are that if Austin ultimately does make his return, he will likely be facing Kevin Owens. This would already be an unbelievable surprise for WrestleMania, but it looks like WWE is planning another big surprise.
According to Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, WWE is planning another “Austin like” surprise for WrestleMania 38. Meltzer listed the possible names could Hogan, Flair, Cena, or The Rock. I will break down all of these possible names.
It is undeniable Hulk Hogan is one of the biggest names in wrestling history, but is him returning really on the same level as Austin? We have seen Hogan return on multiple different occasions over the past few years and each time it has felt underwhelming and there was a mixed reaction from the crowd.
Flair is done with WWE for the time being. After his recent departure from the WWE and how outspoken he has been about the company, I see no scenario where he is the big surprise set for Mania.
Cena returning would be huge. He would get an insane pop from the crowd and the internet would be buzzing. But Cena has recently said he doesn’t think he’ll be able to make it to Mania this year due to his busy schedule. Although we know the WWE is a never say never company and that Cena may be fooling us, I don’t think he is the surprise either.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Arguably the biggest name in Hollywood and the biggest name in professional wrestling history. Yes, The Rock has a busy schedule on the same level if not more extreme then Cena’s schedule. But I think this is the year we’re going to see the great one return to the WWE. The Rock returning would obviously be on the same level as Austin’s return and on top of that, there is a story to tell if he returns. What is that story? The Rock vs. Roman Reigns. This has been teased for what feels like forever now and I believe the perfect time to do it is now.
After Elimination Chamber this weekend, we really will begin to see the card come together. Along with the results of Elimination Chamber, with all of the rumors now going around about Mania this year the show is really shaping up to be can’t miss.
