The Controversy of Colin Kaepernick

ck On August 26th, 2016 before the San Francisco 49ers third preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, Colin Kaepernick began trending all over social media after he kneeled during the national anthem. Since the first time he kneeled, Kaepernick has been one of the most talked about athletes and the topic of him kneeling is arguably the most controversial topic in sports media currently.
After the first game of him kneeling the media was definitely buzzing and reporters had many questions during his postgame press conference. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” said Kaepernick. After the first game he kneeled during the national anthem, some of his teammates gave their support and joined him such as Eric Reid and Nate Boyer. Although there were many people that gave their support to Kaepernick, there were obviously a lot of people giving him negative feedback such as a fan prior to the 49ers vs. Raiders holding a sign that read “You’re an american. Act like one.” The negative feedback and hate continued against Kaepernick at games, and over social media.
Although people may have there opinions and hate towards Kaepernick, he had the guts to stand up for his beliefs and a try to get more attention to a controversial topic such as police brutality that nobody is doing anything about. Kaepernick has said he doesn’t intend his stance to be a criticism of the military, claiming he has “great respect for the men and women that have fought for this country.” people may argue that him kneeling is a disrespect to the military and all the people who have served this country but that is not at all his intentions. Kaepernick to this day continues to get hate from many people and sports fans, but he is now not the only sports athlete showing there support for him and standing up for their beliefs. Many NFL stars such as Marshawn Lynch, Brandon Marshall, Michael Bennett, Marcus Peters, Chris Long, Jamie Collins, Duke Johnson Jr and the list goes on. This shows that Kaepernick was the one to bring attention and protests for what people and players believe in.
The reason many sports fans and NFL players are upset about Kaepernick’s current position in the NFL is that last year he was benched to Blaine Gabbert then was released by the 49ers in the 2017 offseason. Kaepernick is a better quarterback than a lot of the starting quarterbacks in the league currently such as Blake Bortles, Josh Mccown, DeShone Kizer, and Andy Dalton just to name a few. Many players, celebrities and fans have voiced their opinion that he deserves a chance to be on a team and at least be a backup. Although there are some teams that have an interest in him, as of right now he is still a free agent. It is very obvious that many teams have no interest just due to the fact that he is standing up for his beliefs but is a ‘problem’ and ‘distraction’ for a team. It is ridiculous that Kaepernick is not signed to any team just for those reasons, everyone deserves a chance especially a great player and person like him. Hopefully at some point soon, Kaepernick will get the chance he rightfully deserves.
