In today’s edition of “The Story of” I will be discussing the story and history of DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tomasso Ciampa).

In September of 2015, independent wrestlers Johnny Gargano and Tomasso Ciampa were given a chance to be apart of the first ever “Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic” tournament in NXT. Gargano and Ciampa were very popular for year around the independent scene and fans took notice of them. So hearing that they would be teaming up in the tournament was very exciting for fans. They ended up forming a tag team and called themselves “DIY”. They were ultimately eliminated in round two of the tournament.

After the tournament ended Gargano and Ciampa continued their tag team on NXT TV. They were on the weekly show facing off against the likes of American Alpha, the Vaudevillian’s, and the Revival. Then after a few months the Cruiserweight Classic rolled around and both Gargano and Ciampa were to be featured in the tournament. They actually faced off against each other in the first round where Gargano came out on top. He was later eliminated by TJ Perkins.

Tag Team Championship journey

DIY’s journey to tag team gold began at NXT Takeover Brooklyn II where they faced off against the Revival. DIY lost that match but continued to chase the titles. At the next Takeover event, NXT Takeover Toronto they defeated the Revival to become NXT Tag Team Champion’s for the first time. They held the titles for two months but ended up losing them to the Author’s of Pain at NXT Takeover San Antonio. They unsuccessfully challenged for the championships twice, and on the second occasion Ciampa turned on Gargano after the match and this was the end of DIY. It was later revealed that Ciampa suffered an ACL injury that required surgery. He would be out for the foreseeable future.

Ciampa’s return and the beginning of a long feud

At NXT Takeover Philadelphia after Gargano unsuccessfully challenged Andrade for the NXT Championship Ciampa made his long awaited return and attacked Gargano at the top of the stage. This was the beginning of a long feud between Ciampa and Gargano. Gargano ended up having a rematch with Andrade for the NXT Championship where if he lost he would be forced to leave NXT. He ended up losing after Ciampa interfered and cost him the match, and his job. The two of them went on to compete at three consecutive NXT Takeover event’s against each other. The most notable match was their “Unsanctioned match” at NXT Takeover New Orleans which was widely regarded as one of the best matches, if not the best match of 2018. Gargano and Ciampa slowly ended their feud as they were put in feuds with other wrestlers. DIY made a reunion in 2019 when they teamed up in the 2019 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament for the second time. Gargano and Ciampa both have had very successful singles runs in NXT after their time as DIY, and after their time feuding with each other.
