The Top 4

Written by Chris Gangan/7-12-20

As the Premier League season is coming to wrap and Liverpool are already crowned champions for the first time in thirty years, there’s still a lot to play for. Teams like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Leicester City are still competing to get champions league qualification. While 2nd place Manchester City sit comfortably, they do have the possibility of getting banned from playing european football for 2 years. It opens up the chance for the 5th place team to get Champions League football, originally it’s only given to the top 4 teams. As a big club it is a priority to finish in the top 4 because of the money and the attraction to bring in big name players. Assuming Manchester City get their appealed approved lets see who can finish in 3rd and 4th.

Chelsea- 60 points with 3 games remaining. Coming into the season nobody expected The Blues to be in top 4 contention. The selling of their best player Eden Hazard to go along with a transfer ban saw many people predict a 8th place finish, but with club legend Frank Lampard coming in as a coach and giving the youth a chance to prosper, many Chelsea fans can be proud of the team this season. Since the restart however Chelsea have been very inconsistent in their form, from beating Manchester City 2-1 to losing 3-0 to Sheffield United a lot of questions arise on who can lead the team from the back. However one of the few bright things for Chelsea since the restart in the rise of American Starboy Christian Pulisic with 6 goal contributions in 7 games. With still having to play last place Norwich, Champions Liverpool, and 6th place Wolves, I do think Chelsea finish in the top 4 despite the shakiness at the back.

Manchester United- 58 points with 4 games remaining. Arguably the best team since the Premier League restart winning every game and drawing just 1 they look almost unstoppable. A big reason why success has come so easily in the last few weeks is because of their new signing Bruno Fernandes, with 5 goals and 3 assists since the restart. We also can’t overlook the likes of Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial who have been scoring goals like it’s nothing, and their starman Paul Pogba coming back from injury making a deadly duo in the midfield with Bruno. Although starting the season very shaky top 4 is looking more and more like a possibility every week. The only game that they have left that can be tricky is the last match of the season which is against another team fighting for the top 4 and that being Leicester City. Despite having a hard game against Leicester I do think they finish in the top 4.

Leicester City- 3 games left 59 points. As fans still talk about their Cinderella season in winning the Premier League at a 1 in 5000 chance, Leicester fans had no idea that their team would be competing in the top 4 in 2020. With main man Jamie Vardy accumulating for 23 goals this season, it does not look likely that they will finish in the top 4. Since the restart Leicester have been very underwhelming claiming a total of 9 points out of the possible 21. Still having to play Tottenham, Sheffield United, and Manchester United the reality of a top 4 finish looks very slim for the Foxes.
