High School Career
In 2014 as a high school freshmen Zion Williamson began playing for the Spartanburg Griffins at Spartanburg High School in South Carolina. In between the start and end of his freshmen year and Zion had a growth spurt that changed him from the skinny 5’9 point guard that he was into a 6’3 powerhouse, he also gained 55 pounds and weighed in at 175 pounds. With an increase in his height and weight he discovered a skill that he never knew existed, performing ridiculous dunks which led to his early fame. At the age of only 15 years old Zion was already dominating on the court averaging 24.4 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 3.3 SPG, 3.0 BPG, and 2.8 APG. In that same season, he earned all state honors and led Spartanburg to a state championship. Then next season as a sophomore Zion grew yet again now standing at 6’6. As a sophomore he averaged 28.3 PPG, 104 RPG, 3.P BPG, 2.7 SPG, and 2.5 APG. As a junior he became a five star recruit and was ranked the number two player in the 2018 class. That season he averaged 36.8 PPG, 13.0 RPG, 2.5 BPG, 3.0 SPG, and 3.2 APG which was a pretty significant increase from his two previous seasons. In his last two years of high school he became an internet sensation as his highlights and dunking videos began to go viral. Zion got a call from Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski who offered him a scholarship to join the Duke Blue Devils. On January 20th, 2018 Williamson officially committed to Duke University.
Upon his arrival at Duke Zion began playing as a forward for the Blue Devils. In his first regular season game he scored 28 points going 11-13 which set the school single game freshman scoring record. In his one season as a Blue Devil Zion averaged 22.6 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 1.8 BPG, 2.1 SPG, and 2.1 APG. Over the time of almost two years from his sophomore season, Zion has picked up an inch and gained over 100 pounds. He is currently listed as 6’7 and 285 pounds which is very impressive given his mobility. Zion is an athletic freak show that can bounce off the ground easily with power as he recorded a max 40 inch vertical leap. He is one of the most interesting and unique basketball prospects to come out of high school in quite some time.
We still have some time until the NBA draft but for months it has been obvious that he will be the first selection. It would be a mistake by any team to pass up on him as he is a franchise changing player. His physique, game play, and style draws comparisons to many NBA legends but the most notable is LeBron James. Zion is said to be the next LeBron James of the NBA and I can definitely see that claim becoming true. Over the years there have been many players who played great in college then were busts in the NBA, but Williamson is not going to be one of those players. He has a very bright future ahead of him, out of college he is already known around the world as a basketball star and he will continue to be known as a star in the NBA.
